CHAPTER 69

He smiled again and turned to hug me. "I never could've done it without you."

I wrapped my arms around his shoulders uneasily and took a deep breath.

This was dangerous.

Getting used to this was dangerous.

I refused to let myself fall backwards. I needed to learn to accept the fact that we were friends, and that was all we could be.

Pulling away, I looked down at the ground in an attempt to sort my thoughts.

Just friends. Well, not even that really.

"It's good that you don't have to worry about staying on the team anymore. That had to be a lot of pressure, worrying about that."

"Yeah, it was," Ryan replied, his voice drifting off.

Several moments passed without either of speaking. I was about to suggest that I get going, when Ryan spoke again.

"Meg," he continued, as I faced him. "Can we put this all behind us?"

I paused, confused. "What do you mean? You staying on the team?"

"No, it's not that at all... Everything that's happened between us for the past few months. The breakup, fights, lies, games... all of it."

"Oh, Ryan, I -"

"I know I told you last night that I was worried about the team and my meetings this morning, but there was more to it than that. I just kept thinking about how when we broke up, I let everything around me fall apart and I don't want that to happen again. I lost you, the game, school, my friends... I don't want to be that guy again."

"You aren't that guy and you won't be."

"I hope not, because I don't think I can do it all again."

He looked away from me and then met my eyes.

"I don't want to do this anymore," he said, his voice a mere whisper as he shook his head.

I just stared at him, confused. And when he didn't say anything else, I panicked.

"What? This?" I asked, motioning to the two of us, sitting here. "Oh, uh ok. I can go," I said, moving to get up off the bench. I wasn't sure where that sudden thought had come from, but I'd rather leave than get in another fight.

"No, it's not that," Ryan replied, reaching for my hand to stop me.

I turned to face him, surprised by his touch.

As I looked down at where his hand rested on mine, Ryan removed his hand and looked down at the pavement. Meanwhile, silence stretched before us.

"Meg," he started, taking a deep breath as I looked up at him. "I just want to make sure that you know I didn't mean a word of what I said last night."

"You don't have to explain a-"

"No, please. I have to say this... Last night, when I yelled at you, it wasn't because I was angry. honestly, I was nervous about those meetings and I was afraid of what would happen if I messed everything up again. But even more than all of that, I was worried about what would happen to us. I wasn't sure if we could be together or how we could be together. I'd been fighting it for a while now, but seeing you leave last night... that really did it for me."

"Yeah?" I asked, staring back at him as tears filled my eyes.

"I want to be with you, Megs. I need to be."

I gasped, totally taken by surprise, as my tears started to fall.

After all of this, he was finally saying the words that I had waited to hear all along.

"Hey, please don't cry," Ryan said, his voice low and steady as he moved closer to me on the bench and wiped the tears away, one by one.

"I just wasn't expecting that," I whispered. "I wasn't sure if you would ever take me back, not after what I did."

Ryan nodded, kissing the exact spot where a tear fell on my cheek, before leaning back to look into my eyes again.

"I never did it to hurt you, Ry. I just wanted to be with you so badly that I didn't know what else to do."

He smiled and then laughed before speaking. "Trust me, I know the feeling."

I smiled as he wrapped his arms around me and kissed me.

My heart raced and I thought I couldn't breathe.

But when he pulled away, there was still a nagging question left in the back of my mind.

"So you forgive me?" I asked halfheartedly, but still a little desperate for that one last piece of information.

"There's nothing to forgive."

"Aw, come on, Ry. You know there is."

"Fine, but only if you forgive me."

"But you didn't do anything," I replied, confused.

"Well, if we're being honest, I did try to sabotage your relationship with Jake," he said, laughing.

"Ry!" I shouted, laughing as I playfully shoved him. "Seriously!"

"Okay, fine. I'll be serious," he said, throwing his hands up in the air as he stood up off the bench and offered me a hand to get up.

"Everything's fine and no one needs to be forgiven," Ryan continued, wrapping his arms around my waist. "We both got a little crazy and went to some extremes, but we had good intentions, so none of that matters. I don't want to worry about any of that anymore. I just want to be with you. That's all. Is that okay?"

"I guess so," I replied, laughing a little.

"Good," Ryan said, smiling as he pushed a stray hair behind my ear.

Then, I took a deep breath and spoke the words that had been on my mind constantly for the past few months.

The feeling that had driven all of my actions...

"I love you, Ry."

The words sounded so familiar, yet if felt like it had been so long since I had heard them.

Either way, the feeling had never left.

And then, I head the only words that I had ever wanted to hear.

"I love you too, Meg."

And then, he was kissing me.

A kiss that I was certain wouldn't be our last.

CHAPTER 68
***PLEASE READ MY NOTE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS CHAPTER! (:

"I swear they have the best apple pie. You have to stop by there before you go back home and try it out."

I shook my head. "I don't think so. My time hanging around here is pretty limited."

Ryan shook his head. "Because Jake and Court have to go back to school?"

I shook my head as I looked down at the snow-covered path we were walking down. "They have to go soon, but I have other reasons too," I said, grimacing.

I saw a worried look cross Ryan's face.

"You don't start classes again for another week, right?"

"Yeah... but it's just time."

He nodded and we our walk as silence stretched before us. I might not have said as much, but we both knew why I couldn't stay here any longer.

After a few more minutes, I spoke again. "You realize that you're not too good at these talks, right?"

Ryan laughed. "Yeah, sorry about that. I was just thinking about some things."

I kept quiet, not wanting to pry. Ryan had made it clear that we weren't really in each other's lives anymore and I didn't want to interfere yet again.

After taking a deep breath, Ryan spoke again.

"I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and honestly, Megs, I don't think things have been right between the two of us for a long time now."

I turned to face him, shocked by his bold words. I opened my mouth to protest, but couldn't get any words out before he continued.

"Ever since we left for school, things have been different. We broke up, I decided I wanted to get you back, you pretended to date Jake, we got back together, and we broke up again. None of that is normal - none of it."

I looked up into his eyes and started to apologize. "I know, Ry, and a lot of that is my fault. Pretty much all of it is, actually. I shouldn't have treated you like that. Breaking up with you that way was terrible and I really - "

"Meg, I don't want to talk about that. So much has happened between now and then that it doesn't even matter," he said, sitting down on a nearby bench.

"How can you say it doesn't matter?" I asked as I sat down next to him. "It changed everything."

"Yeah, I guess it did. But at the same time, it doesn't really change how things are now."

I laughed slightly, but there wasn't much that was funny about the situation. "No, I guess not."

"Listen... I want to apologize for how I acted last night. I should have never said those things to you then, or before I left to come up here."

"Well, it doesn't matter if you say it. It just matters if you mean it, and it sure seemed like you did."

"No... no way, Meg. I was upset and stressed out. I never meant any of that. I swear."

"I get that you were upset, but you keep saying that you were stressed out. What's going on?"

"It's about the team. I was nervous about some meetings that I was having with my coaches and was worried about how they would turn out or if it was too late for me to turn things around. But that's not an excuse and you shouldn't have to hear about any of that after how I treated you. I was out of line -"

"No, I want to know. How'd you do?"

Ryan bit his lip as he met my eyes. He took a deep breath, stalling before he spoke again.

Then, he broke into a smile. "I'm back on the team."

"Ry, that's great!" I said excitedly, touching his arm. "So what did they say? How did the practiced go?"

"My coaches said that they were impressed. I still have a lot to prove, but they're happy with how things are going. They said that if I keep this up, there's no reason that we can't put everything that happened last semester behind us."

"Wow! I'm happy it all worked out," I replied, truly happy for him. "You worked really hard to make this happen. You deserve it."

He smiled again and turned to hug me. "I never could've done it without you."

Hello! I'm terrible, I know. I've been gone for practically a month without writing and that's awful. I always hated when I read stories where that happened and I know it must annoy you guys too. I just want to tell you how sorry I am. I never meant to go this long without writing. I went away for a week after I posted the last chapter and my computer also broke. It's been broken for about three weeks now, so I haven't really been on a computer at all, let alone on here. My story is on my computer too and I had part of this chapter written and completely lost it. I've been borrowing Lauren's computer for the past few days, though, and have been writing this chapter. I hope you guys enjoy it and that you'll still read this, despite how long it's been. I am so sorry for that. I don't even know what else to say, other than I'm sorry :(

As for this story, things are going to be wrapped up pretty soon, but it isn't because of my computer situation (or lack of one, I guess). It's just the wayt hat I've always had the ending planned out. I think we should probably have 3 chapters left? I'm going to work as hard as I can to have those for you guys soon, just please be a little patient. I probably won't have a new one up each of the next three days. I'll have one by the end of the week, though (:

Thank you so much if you're still reading this story. It means so much to me that you guys have stuck by me from the beginning until now (:

THANK YOU!!

LAST KISS – A Story by HALEY HOLLYWOOD :)

CHAPTER 67

After the uncomfortable silence that had filled the car as we drove, I welcomed the sight of the diner as Ryan pulled into the parking lot. For someone who had wanted to talk, he had been awfully quiet on the ride over here.

Wasting no time at all, I climbed out of the car before Ryan even had a chance to cut the engine.

Once we entered the diner, I waited while Ryan requested a table, or as he said – a booth for two. He always said the same thing when we went to the diner at home, and the irony of the situation hadn’t escaped me. We always went to the diner there, and now, when we could’ve gone anywhere at all, he was bringing me back to yet another diner.

Well, it was too bad. I wasn’t in the mood for a stroll down memory lane. I would’ve been up for it yesterday, but today was an entirely different situation.

- - - - - -

Taking a sip of the orange juice that our waitress had just brought me, I allowed my eyes to wander as I glanced around the room.

I wondered how long this could possibly last. The most Ryan had said since we had gotten here was that he would have the breakfast special – pancakes, eggs, and bacon.

While his appetite didn’t surprise me, his silence sure did. I thought we had come here to talk, not torture me.

I continued to look around, as he suddenly spoke.

“This place reminds me of you, ya know.”

“Why’s that?” I asked, smirking, already knowing his answer.

“It just reminds me of the diner at home and all the times that we would go out with your parents for your birthday dinners when we were little. When I first got here in August, I was pretty homesick, but then I came here with Nick and Julie and it reminded me of home a little bit, and of you, if that makes any sense. I started coming here more and more, because it helped me deal with it and made the homesickness go away some.”

“Is that why-”

“The waitress knows my name?” he finished for me.

When I nodded, he continued. “Yeah, I used to come here a lot, to study or just hang out in between classes since it’s practically on campus.”

“I hope you didn’t order the breakfast special every time,” I said, sarcastically.

He shook his head and smiled. “No, and I have a feeling that I won’t be doing it much more after this with basketball and all.”

I frowned, remembering our conversation from last night, when Ryan told me that he had too much going on to be with me, not to mention how he questioned if he could still trust me.

As much as I loved the sport, I couldn’t bear the mention of it today. It just reminded me of that disaster of a conversation.

“Hey, Meg, come on. Aren’t you going to talk to me at all?” Ryan asked, trying to meet my eyes.

“I think you answered that question last night,” I said, quickly, without thinking about it.

I honestly didn’t mean to be rude, but it was hard.

I put my heart on the line last night when I tried to win him back, but he didn’t want any of it.

He rejected me, right then and there.

How else was I supposed to handle this? Most girls don’t sit down and have breakfast with their ex-boyfriends right after he breaks up with them and then declares that he won’t take you back.

He must have noticed my discomfort, because Ryan reached forward and touched my hand.

I flinched at hsi touch.

“Meg, I don’t know where to start. I know I screwed things up last night and that you’re angry with me. And honestly, you have every right to be. I should’ve never told you that I couldn’t make time for you with everything that is going on in my life. We’ve known each other for so long and you mean so much to me that I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t in my life.”

“Apparently, you’d be just fine.”

“No, that’s just it, Meg. I wouldn’t. You mean too much to me. You’ve been my best friend for as long as I can remember and I don’t know what I would do without you. I’ve been an idiot lately and I’m sorry for that. I was just so shocked by everything that happened that I didn’t know what to do. I wasn’t sure how to react.”

I looked up, meeting him in the eyes, and wondered if this was real.

“But hearing you say those things as you walked away last night,” he continued, “it made me think. You said something about never speaking to each other again and that really clicked for me. I don’t want that to happen. I want you to always be in my life.”

I gave him a small smile before asking, “But what about how you said you can’t trust me?”

Ryan looked up from the check and I saw the sadness in his eyes.

I was making this harder for him than he had thought it would be.

Quickly signing the check, he stood and motioned for me to do the same.

“Can we go for a walk? I have some things that I want to talk to you about and I don’t really want to do it here.”

I nodded, knowing that this was what he needed and followed him out the door and into the frigid cold.

Once again, I was venturing out onto another walk with Ryan and once again, I didn’t know what to expect.

I’m so sorry that I’ve practically fallen off the face of the earth for the past few weeks. I really meant to write and post chapters for you guys, but things have been a little hectic lately. I hope you’ll enjoy this chapter, though. Let me know what you think of it and I’ll have another one up in a little bit!

Enjoy – and thanks for reading!

LAST KISS – A Story by HALEY HOLLYWOOD :)

CHAPTER 66

“Hey Jake, what’s up?”

I glanced over at Court, who had turned to look out the window as she spoke.

I picked up a t-shirt, folded it, and placed it in my bag, desperate for a distraction.

“Yeah, well we were hoping to get out of here a little early,” Court said, peering over at me before turning away again. “Maybe grab some breakfast once we hit the road?”

I nodded, glad that she was willing to go along with my suggestion.

The longer we stayed here, the more I thought about everything that had gone wrong.

And I definitely didn’t want to dwell on that.

As I folded the last of my clothes, I looked at the tv, wondering how quickly I could leave this place.

I set my bag and coat on one of the chairs near the door, and sat down on the bed as I looked for something to watch. Court still needed to pack and would probably want to shower before we left, so I would probably be waiting around for a little while.

“Wait – why?” I heard Court ask as I changed the channels.

I recognized the concerned tone in her voice and looked over at her, but her back was still to me.

As I turned my attention back to the tv, she spoke again.

“But I don’t understand, if you want to talk to me, why can’t you just say it now?”

“Okay, fine. I’ll come over.” She rolled her eyes at me as she pulled on a sweatshirt.

“You’re being weird, Jake, but I’ll be there in a minute.”

Hanging up the phone, she placed her hand on the door.

“I don’t know what’s going on, but I guess I’ll be back in a few minutes, Meg.”

“Okay, let me know,” I said, laughing.

About two minutes after Court left, there was a knock on the door.

As I made my way to the door, I saw that her room key was still on the nightstand next to her bed. This would probably be the fifth time she forgot it since we got here.

“Forget your key again,” I said, laughing, as I pulled the door open, only to see that it wasn’t Court standing there.

My jaw dropped as I saw Ryan standing in the hallway in front of me.

“Hey,” he said, giving me a nervous smile.

“What – What are you doing here?” I asked, stuttering.

I didn’t know what else I was supposed to say. With how we had ended things yesterday, I didn’t want to hear more of that or go through that experience again.

“I just wanted to talk to you and –”

“Like last night? That’s what I wanted and you told me you couldn’t play these games anymore.”

“I know, Meg. I didn’t mean that.”

“What do you want me to say, Ry? That it’s okay? Because, honestly, it’s not. I came all the way down here to see you and you wouldn’t even talk about us, which hurt. Maybe you were right… Maybe we shouldn’t even bother doing this,” I said, slowing easing the door shut.

“Wait,” Ryan protested, placing a hand on the door to stop me.

Taking a deep breath, I opened it again.

"Just let me take you to get something to eat, okay? We can talk, I promise,” he pleaded. “It’s the least I can do since you came all the way down here.”

I wasn’t sure that it was the best idea. After what had happened yesterday, I didn’t want to get my heart broken again.

But if he wanted to talk, the least I could do was listen.

“Okay,” I replied after a waiting a moment. “Let me grab my coat.”

Hello (:
Is it really only Tuesday?
Seriously, this week is going by so slowly :(

Well, I better go. I can't think of anything else to say haha.
I blame @lovebug-lauren . She took all my creativity when she made me help her write a poem.

Oh well... have a good day tomorrow!
